We installed an add on wood burner in the basement that attaches to the heat ducts by our furnace. It works great. I live in Wisconsin and we do not use any other heat for our house.180lbs of LP lasts us about 2 1/2 years (used only for cooking). You can also get an attachment for your hot water heater that will preheat your water before it goes into the hot water heater therefore saving you tons of money. We bought our wood burner at Menards..most home improvement stores carry them in the winter months it costs about $700.00 and you need to make sure your chimney is in good enough shape, we installed triple walled chimney pipe in ours. Fire place inserts are nice ( we also have one) but do not heat the whole house.

ADDED: Just got a Menards paper yesterday, sorry the price is closer to $1500.00 now for the wood furnace. It still will pay for itself in one heating season if you live in a cold climate.

I use very small fans to circulate the air in the living areas. We are able to heat our 1400 sq. Ft. Home with about 4 cords of wood every winter. Our basement however, is where all the pipes come and go. We moved the thermostat on the oil burner to the basement, and set it at 45 degrees.

make a small stack of thin wood, put the fire starter under it,
add some larger wood [say 2 inches in dia] light it, when every thing is burning add a larger pc of wood,
use hard woods, they last longer,

How do you lose a Yeti?

Losing The Yeti In Forgotten Nation Of Bhutan

SIGNYAR, Bhutan – He remembers the darkness of the pine forest, and the footprints, and his terror when the creature began to howl. He remembers the stories of his childhood, of a beast that stalked the upper reaches of the mountains, and how fear spread through the village every time it was spotted.

In a remote Himalayan kingdom that held out against the modern world for as long as it could, the old man remembers a time when the yeti was a normal part of life.

“The creature has always been out there, and it’s out there still,” says Sonam Dorji, 77, sitting on the pockmarked wooden floor of his small farmhouse. It’s a cold Himalayan morning, and he warms himself beside a wood stove. The smell of burning pine fills the room. “If you travel the ancient trails, even today, there’s a good chance you’ll meet him.”

His son-in-law, listening to the old man’s stories, laughs dismissively from across the room.

Tshering Sithar is 39, a bulldozer operator helping pave the road to this village, which until recently could only be reached on foot.

“What is there to say?” he asks. “There’s nothing out there in the forest. Any educated person today knows this.”

Many traditional beliefs remain deeply ingrained in Bhutan, from astrology to the worship of Buddhist priests. But the monster is now increasingly forgotten, and the link to an ancient past is more often seen as a sign of ignorance.

“We can’t live today like we did in the 17th or 18th century. Our culture has to be dynamic,” says Khandu Wangchuck, Bhutan’s finance minister. “Within the last 40 years, we’ve jumped 300-400 years.”

And the yeti? Wangchuck pauses. “I think most people today know this is just a story.”

What does it mean, though, when accepted fact decays into mere folk tale? When a belief that helped tie a land together is relegated to myth, what happens to the culture that believed in it? And how can a country that entered the 20th century just a few years ago make its way in the globalized world of the 21st?

And how can a country that entered the 20th century just a few years ago make its way in the globalized world of the 21st?”

The loss of tradition is far more valid than what one believes or does not believe.

Though I’m a realist, something must be behind such myth or folklore, and casually tossing aside custom and culture for the sake of an uncertain “scientific absolute” divests cultures of a certain sense of personality.

What are the brown spots on my chimney?

I have an exterior chimney with an 8×8 teracota flue that is white stucco exterior and it vents a free standing wood stove. I recently noticed brown stains on various parts of the chimney exterior on the white stucco. What could this be? Could it be from the stove burning too hot or from a chimney fire? I never heard a roaring sound or have any reason to believe there was a chimney fire and the chimney was cleaned in October. I thought maybe the stains could be the result of heat inside the flue burning through the chimney. Is this possible? They are random brown spots of various sizes starting halfway up the chimney. There is nothing around that I see that could have rusted and dripped on the chimney.

I’d seriously doubt that it has anything to do with the actual operation of the chimney, I’d bet on rust stains, but who knows? Let’s see what everyone else has to say.

If you have painted it and not used a high heat paint, then that will have to come off. Otherwise, go and get some stove black and put that on there. If that gets on anything, it is pretty well ruined, so be careful.

Wood burning stove question?

I have purchased a home with a wood burning stove in the living room. It sits in a corner. The corner is brick on the floor under the stove and all the way up to the ceiling. The insurance company is coming to inspect the stove this week for safety, but it is new and I am not too concerned about the safety the way it is now. It is fairly clean and looks new. The previous owner put trim up at the top next to the ceiling, but did not paint it. Is it safe to paint? If so, is their a certain type that is best to use? We had a stove in our family room when I was a child, but it vented into the fireplace, so I have no experience with this situation. What advice can you give me about using the stove? If you are going to say something stupid like sell the house, go answer another question.

admin answers:

Yes you can paint the trim but I would suggest that you use a water based latex and not enamel.Flammable surfaces should be at least 36 inches away from the heat source and you need to make sure the chimney is clean at least once a year to prevent chimney fires.

Could be more of an allergic reaction than paint fume problems. Fume-type reactions usually result in lightheadedness and eventually fainting as the oxygen to your brain is cut off. The body will shut down the brain to preserve life.

Allergic reactions to paints such as spray paint are VERY common. It sounds more like an allergic reaction with the chest pain and shortness of breath.

Best advice anyone can give you is to go to the doctor and get checked out.

Backup Power for Your Home

Article by John Carle

The starting point is proper insulation and air sealing, before you consider your backup power needs.

In summer months, the main purpose of a backup system for Canadians is to keep the house from becoming too warm. People who have difficulties with extreme heat (seniors, asthmatics, and so on) especially need an alternative plan to power their homes. The starting point is proper insulation and shading. External blinds or shutters can help.

3 — Change to Energy-Efficient Appliances

Your backup system will do the most good if it is powering efficient appliances. Check if there is an EnerGuide label to determine each appliance’s power consumption, or use an electrician’s ammeter to find out how much power each appliance uses — its current draw in amps. Ammeters can be purchased in a hardware or electrical supply store.

The energy requirements of some appliances will surprise you. Replace the inefficient appliances with efficient models. Change to energy-efficient light bulbs like compact fluorescents. When buying new equipment, get the most efficient possible — for example, an Energy Star
